Researchers from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), in collaboration with the California Building Industry Association (CBIA), will conduct a live wildfire demonstration on June 10, 2025 to kick off CBIA’s annual Pacific Coast Builders Conference (PCBC 2025).

Attendees will see in real time how a system of science-based mitigations, including using noncombustible building materials and maintaining a noncombustible five-foot buffer around a home, also known as Zone 0, can help reduce risk of ignition at the parcel level, a key component to community-level resilience and preventing urban conflagration events like those recently experienced in Los Angeles County.

Science-Based Mitigations Help Reduce Risk of Ignition

The demo will explore the three critical areas of the home to mitigate against ember attack, the leading cause of ignition during wildfires. These include creating a non-combustible Zone 0, having a Class A roof and addressing exterior features like vents, all required by IBHS’s Wildfire Prepared Home – the first-ever designation program that empowers homeowners to take the system of science-based actions shown by the latest research to meaningfully reduce a home’s wildfire risk.

The program will include insights into IBHS’s ongoing community-level wildfire research and will cover how mitigating wildfire risk is a shared responsibility at the parcel and community levels requiring collective action to prevent wildfire from entering and spreading through neighborhoods. Mitigation strategies, like maintaining fuel breaks, expanding separation distances between structures, eliminating connective fuel pathways and using fire-resistant building materials can help communities build better defense against wildfires.

PCBC 2025 will also feature a Wildfire Resilience education breakout session and exhibit displays of wildfire resiliency solutions.
